Absolution: Organic cosmetics made in France

My article on Paris Spas in the Huffington Post introduced me to a ton of great spots to relax and recharge in the city. One of my favorite discoveries was l'Echappée Spa, where weary urbanites can tuck away and enjoy a heated swimming pool and a full-service hammam along with the gamut of traditional spa services.

L'Echappée Spa provided a window into the world of respite that is available to over-worked Parisians, as well as a doorway to a new discovery: the French-made cosmetic brand Absolution

Absolution is a range of unisex cosmetics that can be customized based on your mood or, more importantly, the whims of your skin. Absolution products are used in all of L'Echappée Spa's facial treatments, which is fitting as one of the brand's goals is to strike "the right balance between an eco-conscious and urban lifestyle" and I can't think of a better place to strike that balance than at L'Echappée.

The concept behind the products is simple: you invest in a base cream- either for the day or night version- and then you choose from a variety of solutions ("Controle", "Eclat", "Energie") that you then mix in to a dab of the base cream, adapting that day's care to your particular caprice.

The containers are constructed so that one can easily dispense a dollop a day and whip up a creative cocktail for your skin care regime.

The coolest bit about Absolution is that the entire line of products is both made in France and made with organic ingredients (59% from organic farming and 99% from natural origin).

While the products come with a price tag typically associated with high-end skin care (prices range from 30-69 euro), they also bare a seal of approval from Ecocert,  a trustworthy organic certification authority.  So if you're able to spend a little more on beauty supplies, why not support locally made and authentically organic products?

Absolution cosmetics can be bought in Paris at the main office in the 3rd arrondissement (19 rue Béranger) and at  L'Echappée Spa (64 rue de la Folie Méricourt, 75011) as well as  in a handful of stores scattered around Europe. Products can also be bought online and the company has just launched a new American Online Boutique !

Saveurs Paris Ile-de-France: La Marque Régionale

I found out about the Saveurs Ile-de-France brand while wondering around the Salon de l'Agriculture. It was in the Saveurs sponsered section of the salon that I discovered great regional and artisinal beers. I hadn't realized that the brand extended beyond marketting at the Salon until I unloaded the stash of organic beer I bought from Brasserie Chevreuse and noticed that the bright green Ile-de-France tote bag that the brewer had sent me and his beer home with contained information about this regional brand.

Saveurs Paris Ile-de-France is an ambitious and organized system of classifying agricultural, artisinal, and even industrial food products that come from the Ile-de-France region (which includes the areas surrounding Paris to total a little over 12,000 km of land).

Broken down into three distincts colors, these brands are an easy guide to use when you want to be sure to buy local. Here's a little translation of the color coding, in case you stumble upon the brand, or try to seek it out:

Green Saveurs labels denote that the agricultural product
was cultivated or produced within the Ile-de-France,

Blue labels indicate that the product was made by an artisanal food producer within the region, and

Grey labels mean that the item was produced by a small or mid-sized agro/food business located in the Ile-de-France.

The brand and its coding system were created by an association called CERVIA (Le Centre Regional de la Valorisation et d'Innovation Agricole et Alimentaire). Created in 2007, the association works to increase the appreciation of local agriculture as well as engender support for producers in the Ile-de-France region, combining both promotion and innovation in the field.

While the labels are probably their most visable contribution to the local cause, their website is also worth visiting. I was really impressed by how informative and interactive it is. My favorite feature is the fact that you can find recipes inspired by local products. The "Cuisiner et Savoir" section of the site allows visiters to chose an item that is typical of the Ile-de-France region (asparagus, apples, even croissants!) and then be offered a variety of recipes in which local produce plays the starring role. Regional alcohols are also included in the list. So, if your looking for local cocktail ideas, why not try the Gentil Coquelicot (The Nice Poppy)?

Le Gentil Coquelicot
For 1 Person:
3 tsps Liqueur de Coquelicot (from Provins)
2 tsps Cointreau
Crémant de Loire

Pour your liqueur and Cointreau into a Champagne flute, then top off with your Crément, or any sparkly wine of your choice.

I'll bet you could find a nice apèro to go with this cocktail, just check out their site!

Day 15: “Bio” Babies: A GMO-Free Formula

While researching different sources of information regarding GMOs, I found this amazing guide that was put together by Greenpeace France.

The guide attributes a color to the major brands and vendors in the country, with green indicating vendors that guarantee a GMO-free policy, orange indicating vendors that have begun to implement programs to eliminate GMOs from their products and red indicating that the vendor makes no guarantee that GMOs are not used in their products.

It is not surprising that all the major chain markets find themselves almost exclusively in the red. Carrefour, Champion, Monoprix, Leader Price et al stock many products that are produced with genetically modified foods; including their beef, poultry, milk, canned goods, breads and pastries. However, what shocked me above all was that none of these brands offer GMO-free baby foods.

According to the Greenpeace guide, major French baby food manufacturers- such as Blédi, Candia, and Mon Potager- as well as the places that sell these products -including Carrefour, Casino, Champion and Leader Price- are promoting the use and sale of genetically modified ingredients in foods destined for their youngest consumers.

Only brands bearing the official “Agriculture Biologique” label can be trusted as GMO-free. It important to note that this green “AB” label is the only absolute guarantee of non-GMO contaminated products. Other labels, such as the Label Rouge, AOC and IGP. Are considered vague by Greenpeace because these labels don't indicate a systematic exclusion of genetically modified products.

It is imperative that parents keep their baby's best nutritional interests in mind because the multinational companies that manufacture their food definitely won't do it for them. This reality was illustrated nine years ago in India, where Greenpeace found that the popular Isomil baby formula contained GMOs. Isomil's manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories, used crops from seeds issued by Monsanto in the production of the baby formula.

While it is illegal to use GMOs in India without prior approval from a designated committee, Abbott Laboratories made no attempt to seek a permit for their importation and use of GMOs in their Isomil products.

The lack of consideration for living organisms, from the ingredients used in their products to the human beings that consume them is frightening and shameful and can be condemned by simply refusing to buy these poor-quality and potentially dangerous products. Parents can look for the friendly green label when baby food shopping, or pick up fresh fruit and veg and DIY.

Wholesome Baby Food is one of many websites that provides resources for parents who want to mash and purée their own peas and potatoes. They also give advice on how to store and conserve your homemade baby food.
